High school teachers generally teach students from the 9th through 12th grades. They usually specialize in one area. Some teach core subjects, such as math, science, or history. Others specialize in elective courses, such as art, music, or physical education. They may teach several different classes within their subject area. For example, a high school math teacher may teach algebra, calculus, and/or geometry.

All states require public high school teachers to have at least a bachelor's degree, which may be in education. Many states require high school teachers to have majored in a content area, such as mathematics or science.

Teacher education programs typically provide instruction on presenting information to students of different abilities and backgrounds. Programs typically include a student-teaching program, in which prospective teachers work with a mentor teacher and get experience instructing students in a classroom. With additional education or certification, teachers may become school counselors, school librarians, or instructional coordinators. Some become assistant principals or principals. Becoming a principal usually requires additional instruction in education administration or leadership. For more information, see the profiles on school and career counselors, librarians, instructional coordinators, and elementary, middle, and high school principals.

Physical education (PE) has been linked to improved cognition and quality of life for students at all grade levels. Because of this, the Ohio State Board of Education provides content standards for PE teachers. They include the following six standards:

A physical education (PE) teacher instructs students about sports, physical development, health, and proper nutrition. A PE teacher has knowledge of sports and the health sciences. Physical education teachers show students not only how to play various sports, but also how physical activity benefits the muscles and overall health. PE teachers also plan activities that help make exercise-based learning more engaging for students.

Physical fitness, experience in team sports, and strong interpersonal and communication skills provide a good foundation for aspiring physical education teachers. Knowledge of team dynamics, kinesiology, and nutrition can help new physical education teachers find employment. The goal of a physical education teacher is to promote physical fitness and to teach students the value of proper health and eating habits. Good PE teachers are role models for their students, and as such, should demonstrate all the attributes of good health and fitness. Physical education teachers inspire their students to live healthy, active lives.

Most physical education jobs are in the occupation of teaching. Some are at health clinics and fitness facilities. Jobs in physical education in public kindergarten to 12th-grade schools should grow at a rate of about 4 percent between 2018 and 2028. This is about as fast as the rate of job growth for all occupations. Many schools have had to cut or reduce their physical education classes because of budget constraints or requirements for state-mandated academic testing, which may be part of the reason for the slower growth in this specialty of teaching compared to other types of teaching jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the five states with the highest total number of jobs as teachers, including physical education teachers, include California, Texas, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. These five states account for about 35 percent of the available physical education teaching jobs. The metropolitan areas with the highest number of physical education jobs as of May 2018 include New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, Miami and Atlanta. The non-metropolitan areas with the most physical education jobs include Northeast Ohio, Northwest Ohio, Central Kansas, North Texas and South Ohio.

There are some additional factors to keep in mind when thinking about the career outlook in physical education. An economic recession could cause additional budget cuts for school districts and other places that hire physical education teachers or instructors. Because the schools have to be focused on meeting academic standards, the physical education departments may be cut. Physical education professionals who are licensed as physical therapists, athletic trainers or personal trainers may have additional job prospects that will help them find employment at a wider range of places

Do you feel called to educate others to live healthy lives through fitness? Do you feel called to coach others to enjoy athletic competition through sport participation? If so, pursuing a graduate physical education degree could be a great option for you.

Physical educators work on the front lines each day to help students stay healthy, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally. With about 13.7 million overweight or obese children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these educators can play a key role in reversing the trend. Many also serve as leaders and change agents in their communities, whether as coaches, counselors, or managers in a variety of settings. 2ff7e9595c
